If you find yourself in need of a touch-up paint job on your vehicle, consider doing it yourself rather than going to a body shop. The process to follow is straight forward. Find out what color paint you need. Look for a sticker on the vehicle that contains the paint code. The sticker is not always in the same place, so you may have to look around.
You’ll need a cleaning agent, 220-grit sandpaper, a base coat, a clear coat, and a rubbing compound. Clean and sand, if necessary, the damaged area. Park the vehicle in a spot away from the sun and dirt. Mild temperature is best with 70 degrees optimum.
Apply the base and clear coat in layers and let dry to allow for blending. Once the paint is completely dry, usually a few days, use the rubbing compound to smooth out the painted area. Remember, preparation is critical.
