Car Foggy Windows: The How & Why

Have you ever questioned how and why your car windows fog up the way they do? It's pretty simple: humid air condenses into water droplets when it meets a cold surface.

So, when you're driving on a hot day and turn on the air conditioning in your car, the cold air from the AC unit can cause the humid air inside your car to condense on the windows. And voilà - you've got foggy windows!

This problem is most common in the summer months. Still, it can happen any time of year if the temperature difference between the inside and outside of your car is great enough. The good news is that there're some things you can do to prevent this from happening. Let's take a sneak peek at a few of them.

Preventing Foggy Windows

1. Use An Anti-Fog Product.

So many products on the market claim to prevent windows from fogging up. Some of these are applied to the glass, while others go in your car's AC unit. You can try some home treatments, like rubbing shaving cream or soap on the windows.

2. Open Your Windows For A Few Minutes Before Turning on The AC.

If you know you'll be using the air conditioning in your car, open the windows for a few minutes before turning it on. This will help equalize the temperature inside and outside of your car and reduce the likelihood of condensation forming on your windows.

3. Use The Recirculate Setting on Your AC.

The recirculate setting on your car's AC circulates the air inside your car without pulling in outside air. This can help control condensation from forming on your windows.

4. Park In a Shady Spot.

If you're going to be stopped for a while, try to find a spot in the shade. This will help keep your automobile cooler and reduce the likelihood of your windows fogging.

5. Turn Off or Disable Any Humidifiers You're Using.

If you're using a humidifier in your home or office, turn it off or disable it before getting in your car. The extra humidity can contribute to condensation forming on your windows.

6. Run Your AC At a Lower Temperature.

If your AC is set to a high temperature, it can cause excessive condensation on your windows. Try putting it to a lower temperature to help prevent this from happening.

7. Use An Anti-Fog Solution.

There are several commercial anti-fog solutions available that can help prevent your windows from fogging up. Spread the solution to a clean cloth and wipe it over all of your car's windows.
