To operate an automatic car, one must understand the various letters and numbers on the shifter. By understanding these symbols, drivers can ensure their car is in the right gear for every situation.

In this blog post by Bill Holt Chevrolet, we'll explain what each one means – so you can shift gears like a pro. Let's get started!

How Does Automatic Transmission Work?

In the background, your car's transmission unit constantly monitors various data points, including engine speed, vehicle speed, and throttle position. This information is used to determine when to shift gears.

Automatic transmissions have two types of shifting: upshifting and downshifting.

Upshifting is when the transmission shifts from a lower to a higher gear. This happens when you increase speed or go up an incline. The transmission will automatically downshift when you reduce speed or go down an incline.

Downshifting is when the transmission shifts from higher to lower gear.

Symbols on the Gearshift

The next thing to understand is the symbols on the gearshift. The most common symbols are P, R, N, D, and L. These letters stand for Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Low.

P or Park:

This is the position for when your car is parked and you are not using it. The car should be in this position whenever you are stopped for a long period, such as at a red light or in a parking spot.

R or Reverse:

As the name suggests, this position is for when you need to back up. You'll want to be careful while in reverse, as it's easy to collide with things behind you.

N or Neutral:

This position between gears can be used when you're stopped and don't want your car to move. It's also useful if you need to coast down a hill.

D or Drive:

This is the position for when you want your car to move forward. It's the most common position for driving, as it provides the best fuel economy.

D1, D2, and D3 are the different gear ratios available in most cars.

· D1 is the highest gear ratio and is typically only used for highway driving.

· D2 is a lower gear ratio and is used for city driving.

· D3 is the lowest gear ratio and is used for off-road driving.

L or Low:

This position is similar to drive but starts in a lower gear. This can be useful when climbing a hill or carrying a heavy load.

Now that you know the basics of shifting, you can experiment with different positions to see what works best. Remember to be careful while you're learning and always use caution when operating a vehicle.
